first half of april

When I began writing this post, it was titled "first week of April."
When I came back to it with images, it was "first third of April."
I intend to publish tonight, before it becomes "what the heck happened to April?"

April is a madcap month.
It's a horse that catches you dreaming,
and suddenly takes off with the bit in its teeth.
Wheeee!

So far this month, we've had multiple snowstorms.

We've had raw and gloomy days when the sun appeared just in time to set.
We've had rain; up to three consecutive days of rain.

And we've had a couple of days that must have been close to 80F.

We've also had precious hours of what I consider perfect just-barely-Spring weather: breezy, clear, warm in the sun and cool in the shade. When the world is, in the words of e e cummings, mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful. Yesterday was just such a day, so in the afternoon, Piper and I took a little stroll by the pond.

I have no idea how well this tiny video will come across,
but do turn your volume up; I want you to hear the bird.

We may have more snow.
I won't be surprised. At all.
Nor bothered.
Just taking it as it comes.

It's April.
Wheeee!

  2. Huzzah for April. I can't believe it's half over. We're seeing green on the trees and pollen on the cars. It's been so nice to have days with the windows open (even put screens in on the back door!).

No more snow! (I just put the shovels away....)

    1. I unplugged the bucket de-icers, but I am not putting them away yet. That was where I made the mistake last year ;)

  3. Sounds like a knock-knock-knocking. Is it a woodpecker? We've not seen the sun here in over a week. Dust off and on, some clouds. April is definitely a mixed bag here as summer finds it's way in. Not looking forward to the heat. But I would like to see some blue skies very soon. Have a lovely week.

    1. A pileated woodpecker! My camera caught the sound perfectly - very loud and resonant - but I'm not sure it comes across the same way on a computer or phone. Thought it was worth a try anyway.
I hope you get some blue skies soon!

  4. Can't find link to video. Perhaps not displaying on my Android tablet?

    1. I don't know for sure, but if you click (or tap) right in the center of the imbedded video box it ought to work - or at least offer you some kind of option for playing it. It's only 9 seconds, and only the first few are the pileated woodpecker, so if you can't get it you aren't missing very much :)

  5. ooooh - a woodpecker! So cool! I've only ever seen a pileated once and that was in flight. Wonderful birdie pictures.

    1. I've been lucky enough to see pileated woodpeckers many times, and sometimes very close indeed. But I hear them FAR more often than I see them, because - like the one in the video - they can be heard from quite far away. Extraordinary birds :)

  6. No embedded video box showing. That's what I was meaning to say. Just a technical thang, for interest. Happens sometimes that my Android won't display as sent. Nbd

  7. So, being incapable of leaving a mystery alone, I went to my laptop and there's the embedded video, working fine. It didn't load onto my tablet. Just fyi!
