Sweetfern, Comptonia peregrina, is neither sweet nor a fern. It looks like something the dinosaurs would have walked through, releasing the warmest, spiciest aromas of imagination.
It's bloodroot - Sanguinaria canadensis - and it is like some kind of magical phenomenon of plant life. I'll try to take a series of images this year and post them together :)
Ahhhh ... spring in the forest!! It actually happened :) Your cat creeping into the shot is wonderful. Took a minute to recognize the whole face, I first just focused on that white nose thinking "rabbit?". So cute.
