still with the markmaking

Daily Markmaking is now in year nine. Can you believe it? I had to check it twice.

Yesterday was #3048: this very small section of a very large red oak (Quercus rubra).

We are at the tipping point of leafing out. In a matter of days, the view I've been enjoying for months - the complex structure of tree branches of many species and growth stages - will disappear in a sea of leaves, and I will spend months enjoying that view. The transition is always such a special time.

At the moment we are in what I think of as the pointillistic phase.

  1. That is a LOT of marks! What a good practice. I love that incipient time of the year, with everything just on the verge of bursting forth. We're a little more leafed out here, which makes it impossible to see the heron nests in the nearby colony, but they're very noisy so we know things are invisibly on track. Chris from Boise

    1. Aren't you lucky to live that close to a heron rookery! For several years I used to pass one on my commute to Cambridge, but here at home I always considered it a red-letter day when Piper and I saw an occasional individual heron on our walks around the pond.

  2. Well done with your stick-to-it-iveness with marks! I love all the varying colours of green this time of year so I understand your appreciation for your view.

  3. Excellent - that's a lot of drawing.

I loving the bits of green coming out. Amazing stuff!

  4. I recently inherited my stepmother's sketchbooks. Apparently she took advantage of drawing and painting classes at their local senior center. I'm thinking it's a habit I should get into as well. Maybe after I establish some of the other new habits I'm trying to work on!

  5. Kudos to you for sticking with it. I can't seem to properly commit to anything that requires daily dedication. Ha!

  6. Good on you for continuing with your sketches for nine years! I am behind reading blogs, as you can see, so just catching up with you.
