happy new year

I've never felt the year turn on January 1st; always in the Autumn. Possibly a remnant of my way-way-back Celtic ancestry.

But last year, April 4th was such a watershed moment it overshadowed the rest of 2024. And the disruption of ordinary life caught a second wave with the shoulder injury in October.

So when I woke up yesterday and thought "April 4th...that seems like a significant date..." it only took a split second to remember why.

Update: the barn has still not been brought back to original condition, but most of the parts that have been replaced are much better-built than the original. So it's a matter of taking the rough with the smooth. (Oh, a bit of humor there, since the barn is built of roughcut lumber.) The barn served most of it's purpose fairly well through the Winter. Now that it's Sort Of Spring, there is plenty of time for more work to be done on the barn before next Winter.

It's so much harder to get things built or rebuilt when I can do almost none of the work myself these days. I just have to accept that, I suppose.

That last sentence suggests that I have not accepted it, doesn't it? Oh well. Anyway.

Since the 4th of April 2024 was such a dramatic day, I've decided to look at yesterday, April 4th 2025, as a turning of the year. Why not? Happy New Year, blogpals!

I rarely make New Year's Resolutions, and don't need to do so now because since the shoulder injury on October 8th, there has been a great deal of rethinking what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, mostly in small, everyday things. And small changes have been made, so...functional resolutions, one might say.

All that's left to do now is to celebrate!

  1. Both my husband and I are in the "Unable to do stuff and pissed off about it" stage of life. It sounds like you are a good way past that and I admire you. Also glad the barn is at least being strengthened even if it is taking longer than wished. Best wishes on your journey and if you acquire any tips about tolerating "Can't do that any more" please pass them on!

  2. A celebration is always in order! And I agree with you about January 1st. Such an odd place to declare a "new year."

We follow the old agrarian ways, which marks March 25th as new year's. It makes more sense to me to have it in spring, when the world awakens from its long winter sleep. (Side note: England used March 25th until 1725, when they finally acknowledged Jan 1st. Those Celts again :)

  3. I agree, January 1 is a weird day to count as New Year. Spring is more logical, with new growth. That inability to do a lot gets expensive, too. I'm not a fan, either.
Anyway, happy spring and a good cashmere harvest when it comes.

    1. Too right about the expense. These days I mentally balance expenditure for work (which I would have done myself for most of my life) against the money I save by not having a vehicle. Makes me feel a bit better about both.

  5. Happy new year, and I second PaintedThread's wish for you! Give me a couple of good solstices and equinoxes and call it good, I say. Here's to the season of vernal pools and spring peepers!

    1. Hi Chris! It's snowing here right now, but just yesterday I was listening for peepers and wondered if my hearing has gone to the point where I can't hear them. If so, may have to try hearing aids again.

  6. Well, Happy New Year! As good a reason to mark the date as any, right?

  7. The current calendar wasn't always in use and the new year was celebrated at different times hundreds of years ago. It's all relative, right.?. Some people wait til spring, a time of rebirth and renewal, to make resolutions. All the repairs will be done in good time. Take care of yourself.
