Remember the Hap?
Here's where it started.
Below is a link to the rest of the story.
In case you ever wondered.
Better late than never?
I wrote a piece about it, and about knitting gifts,
for the wonderful fiberfolk at MDK, here:
I hope you like it.

THAT is gorgeous! ...and SHOULD even feel wonderfully warm IF winter ever comes. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks - it IS very warm, even though the fabric feels quite light and airy. Those Shetland sheep don't mess around :)
DeleteLooks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sally! Many people knit this pattern over and over, and I understand why it can become addictive.
DeleteWhat a fantastic article! And what great advice; I'm going to remember that. I'm not sure why we always think something has to be a surprise, but something about collaboration seems really special. They made a good choice and the hap is truly beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks VERY much, Leigh - after so much silence, it's a relief to know I can still Use My Words.
DeleteI think the "surprise" thing is so habitual we rarely step back to evaluate whether it's working. I'm delighted that the MDK comments are so favorable!
A really nice article and and good way of approaching gift giving where handiwork is concerned. I recently made a bunch of bags in cotton and before we went to Jerusalem, i sent pictures of the colors I had so that at least the girls could pick the color they liked. They didn't know what they were getting, but at least they got the color they most liked. Before our nephew went back to Canada Thursday, I had him pick bag colors for his sisters -- I hope he picked the right ones. :) (They've already sent me thank you messages so I hope they get some use out of them.) The baby blanket you made is really so very lovely and for sure it will be treasured after all the planning that went into it. Nice to know you are blogging again -- I decided it was time to hop back into the blogosphere, too. Take care.
ReplyDeleteOh I like the color choice method you came up with - I'll remember that! And I'm so glad you're going to be blogging again - I'm always happy when a new Tammy post appears in my reader list :)
DeleteOnce again you've given me a lot to think about (gosh, how I've missed you when you were on hiatus!). I've never thought of doing a collaborative project and instead have gone my merry way and done what I *thought* the recipient(s) would like. I choose colours and patterns that I expect them to appreciate and maybe, just maybe, I've been going about it all wrong all along. Reading your article has opened a whole new school of thought for me. Too late for this Christmas, but maybe a change for the next one.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice thing to say! I've appreciated it SO much that you've stayed in touch during my unplanned hiatus. I've popped in on your blog and others in the interim, but it's not the same as being part of an ongoing casual conversation. Now I'm hoping to get back into the rhythm of frequent photographing and blogging, and comments like yours are a big boost. Thank you so much :)
DeleteThat is beautiful, Quinn. What pleasure to snuggle under it come winter!
ReplyDeleteThe baby - now not such a baby! - loves this blanket :)
DeleteThe hap is beautiful, and the article is wonderful. "I think knitting is better used to relieve stress, not create it." Bingo! Keep using your words (and photos and pencils and watercolors and and and). They are a joy. But do remember to blog when YOU want to - it too should relieve stress, not create it.
ReplyDeleteChris from Boise
Thanks, Chris. And thanks for leaving so many kind comments - I hope you see my replies :)
