a bit of blog befuddlement

Many thanks to everyone who left a comment about commenting.

I've been wandering around backstage in my own blog, trying to find the source of the problem. I've learned a couple of things, but nothing related to the issue.

So far the only possible clue is that comments may not be posting from phones -
two readers have now mentioned that.

I'm relieved to know that there are no ads appearing on Comptonia!
~~~
About the ads that have recently been showing up on the Feedly page, here is an example using my own blog post list. I hope the screenshot will be legible - as always, left-click to embiggen.
To be clear: I'm not seeing these ads on the actual blogs - just prominently displayed on the Feedly list of posts for each blog.
One of these things is not like the others...
Here's another example.
Ads disguised as blog posts:
Well, that's enough about the mysteries of the internet for one day.
Onward to something I understand: today's Daily Markmaking.
A detail of the base of the massive red oak on the Upper West Side,
surrounded by stones and snow.
I hope your week is off to a grand start!
  1. That interspersing of ads that look like comments is something Google is being forced to stop on its search engine. They just started it and there are storms of complaints. Looks as if Feedly is trying it.
    I no longer bother with feeds, since they all seem to break down or change in ways I don't like. I just follow blogger ones on my reading list and get others to email posts. I think it works reasonably well.
    Blogger has suddenly restarted notifying me of new comments, something it stopped months ago. Not all of them, just here and there. I think there's a lot we can't really fix.
    1. In all the years I've been reading blogs, I've only used two feeds, and the last time I had a problem with one was in 2013, when Google shut down Reader, so I really can't complain. Many of the blogs I read are not Blogger-based, so using a reader that handles them all in one page of simple, organized space is really helpful to me. I'll have to see how annoying the ads become.
  2. So Feedly is now adding sponsored ads to your feed. Sponsored posts are common on Facebook (one of the reasons I rarely visit it). Amazon does this with sponsored products, which is annoying because most of them have nothing to do with what you're searching for. If the public is viewed as a cash cow, what else can we expect!
    Like Boud, I just us my Blogger Reading list, although Blogger doesn't usually has "problems" finding non-Blogger feeds.
    Your markmaking is interesting. It makes me want to step back and get a bigger picture.
    1. Yes, I mentioned in a follow-up comment to the previous post that the $6/month version of Feedly - which I've never explored in the past because the free version has worked fine for my purposes - apparently allows one to avoid these sponsored ads. I've been boycotting both facebook and amazon for years now, for political reasons, so learning that I'm missing their sponsored ads is just a bonus - thanks!
  3. I get similar ads with my e-mail for crying out loud. At least the e-mail puts the ads at the top, so they are a bit easier to spot, but still.
    And I was getting the Feedly ads for a couple of weeks but right now I am not getting them. Don't know why or what I did but I am grateful! If I ever figure out what made them go away I will let you all know.
    1. This thing about ads in emails - which may be similar to what Boud mentioned in the previous post's comments - is total news to me! I don't see tag lines (apart from "sent from my x-phone" type lines) or up-top ads in my emails and I certainly hope no one is seeing them in mine. Good gracious!
      You give me hope that the ads in Feedly may yet disappear. And KB isn't seeing them at all, which makes me wonder if they are/were testing a new money-making (for them) idea which is not panning out and will be discontinued. Fingers crossed!
  4. In my experience, Feedly has always had sponsored additions to every feed, usually the third or fourth from the top. Easy to spot, given that they are marked "sponsored". Like ads on the edges, my eyes quickly learned to skip over them.
    1. How interesting! I've been using Feedly for many years and have never seen sponsored ads until a couple of weeks ago!
  5. I just read your post about commenting problems. My comments always show up, but I have had a reader or two of my blog tell me they comment but it doesn't show. I have never figured out why, but the cell phone thing might be the answer. I took AdSense off my blog when a reader complained about the ads. I made about $100 a year from the ads so kinda hated to lose that income but if the ads are offending people, not worth keeping. Even though I tried to control ad content, the objectionable ones still came through.
    I'd like to know how you got the Reply function in the Comments. I would love to do that, but that option doesn't seem to exist in my setup choice.
    1. Maybe the Reply only works with Embedded comments? I've always had the comments set up as embedded, so I'm not sure. One thing I've never been able to figure out is how to post a link in the comments section, but considering the purpose of most spam, maybe that's a safety feature.
  6. It almost sounds like it's an issue with Feedly - so far Inoreader seems to be okay but no doubt they'll monkey around with the status quo there too. Like Boud I've noticed that Blog-grrr is suddenly popping comments into my email inbox again after months of being choosy about which ones they allow in. Wish they'd leave well enough alone!
  7. I wonder if I've been missing the ads on feedly because they look like blogs. Maybe I even commented on them ;)
    I love your Upper West Side oak. Well done! I can feel the texture from looking at it.
    1. Thanks, KB! I've been experimenting with drawing small details of some of the big trees, since efforts to draw - or even photograph! - the big trees have been consistently unsuccessful. I have photographed that particular oak hundreds of times, and have never conveyed it's presence well at all. I'm enjoying these smaller attempts much more :)
