Sweetfern, Comptonia peregrina, is neither sweet nor a fern. It looks like something the dinosaurs would have walked through, releasing the warmest, spiciest aromas of imagination.

Feel free to correct me on this identification:
young male Eastern Pondhawk.
If it's a pondhawk, I don't know what it was doing in my garden.
Nice photo Oh dear, I realize that he looks familiar, but not enough to bring back the name. This summer I've seen huge dragonflies or damsel flies whatever. There is an orange-ish one at a store that appears to hover over the parked vehicles. Weird.
I haven't been at the pond with Piper much this summer, because of the dreadful weather, so I've only seen a few familiar ones here at home. But this one is new to me, and I tried to find it online. Still wondering why IT wasn't at the pond!
Thank you for leaving a comment! I enjoy reading each one, and will usually reply either here or on YOUR blog!

Can't help with a definite identification - but how beautiful is he/she!!! Those delicate wings amaze me.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I always enlarge the images to stare at the details, especially the wings. Just miraculous.
