shortlist

  • Have you entered the amazing bookstore giveaway yet? Entries close on the 31st, and since the shop is in England, their timezone is several hours ahead of all the US timezones. Do it! Do it now!

  • Exciting local news: the kittens caught their first mouse!

"Aw, shucks, t'weren't nuthin'!"

  • Equally exciting: the mouse was completely dead and fully intact when I saw it and quickly disposed of it. 'Nuff said.

"You're welcome! But I can't talk now - flying mice!"

  • Piper recently acquired another spa neckerchief. She usually has two professional baths each year: Spring and Autumn. This year, thanks to her lightening-quick ability to find and roll in stinky stuff while I'm distracted for two minutes, she has had four baths. Or maybe five. Or was it six? I'm not going to look at my checkbook to count the appointments. I don't like cursing at bedtime.

"Go ahead, turn away for 2 minutes. Make my day."
(She's not really cross, here; just waiting for a treat.)

  • It has rained a cold, dank, gloomy drizzle for four days, off and on. But tonight feels relatively balmy, so I'm hopeful there is better weather ahead. We still have some very colorful foliage, but much has fallen. Here's another "Before And After" scene for you, this time with images taken about a week apart. This is the end of my driveway as seen from the road:
Before

After

I hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
Have a wonderful Sunday!

  1. I have no problem with cats catching mice - that is part of their function. However, I do have a problem with them catching live mice which they bring indoors for the humans "approval" and then "accidentally" letting them go - and then they grow bored with the game, so then it's up to humans to sort out... ;)

    1. Dani, I think your kitty is not "accidentally" letting the mice go. She is saving them for later. I'm sure you feel better now, right? ;)

  2. Piper looks charming in her new scarf. Congratulations to the Cats! I heard that mice will eventually go away when cats are around.
Cold, rainy and windy weather have bare lots of local foliage, but there's still some left, even green trees yet to turn.

    1. I'm hoping the mice get the message. The moment the weather turns cold, they start showing up at the house with their tiny little suitcases.

  3. Piper looks very fetching in her new scarf and 'do'. Now just to convince her that disgusting things aren't to be rolled in. Congratulations to the kitties for being so brave. We had the dreaded four-letter-word stuff (2" of it) on Friday and, although it's gone, it's been dull and drizzly ever since. Finally entered the contest too. It was SO hard to pick just one book!!

    1. SOOO hard! I wonder how many people won't enter the contest because they just can't pick One Book! I was surprised to realize that most of my own "most important" books were published prior to 1936, which made them ineligible. But fortunately that discovery actually helped me work out which book I could choose :)

  4. Those kitties are learning!!! Believe it or not, our dog, R, is a very successful mouser. If there's a mouse in the house, his (fully diagnosed) obsessive-compulsive disorder turns to the mouse. If he corners one, he patiently lies there waiting for it to try to make a run for it. High drama!

I don't know about you but I get really sad when the leaves fall. It feels like we've returned to a black and white world. The end of your driveway was glorious a week ago!

  5. Those yellow leaves are spectacular! A bit depressing when the trees are bare so quickly. No snow yet? We had some snow last week, but only in the early morning before it turned to rain. Good thing the kittens are learning to be mousers. I have a skunk living (hibernating?) under our garden shed. I keep expecting the dog to come in smelling like a skunk. So far so good ;)
