heavy horses

Two members of Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale hitch, having a word.

I've always had a deep, deep fondness for heavy horses.

When I was a little girl, a favorite treat - and a rare one, since no one in my family shared my interest in horses - was to visit the huge retired work horses at the MSPCA Nevins Farm and share out a box of sugar cubes.

Decades later, one of my favorite adult lesson horses was a Percheron mare.

Lusitano stallions in Portugal and a Percheron mare in Vermont...

I was never much of a rider, but no one can say I lacked range.

  1. I am not a rider, not a horse person at all, but I also love the big horses. Like big dogs, I've always felt that they are less nervous about the world and people because of their size, and therefore safer to be around. My sister and I had an opportunity years ago to 'visit' an anhauser-busch colt, and I was amazed to find that it had no horsey odor because of the extraordinary care and grooming those horses are given. They are so very accustomed to being touched and loved and the results are obvious. Beautiful creatures.

    1. They certainly are well cared for. I visited one of the farms many years ago, and it was a showplace. But...I love the smell of horses :)

  2. Between the ages of 10-12 I was totally in love with horses. Collected anything I could that had to do with horses. A friend and I were going to write a book about them. We typed away on an old typewriter in her closet. Wish I knew what happened to all those things I collected.

  3. I'm always impressed with the size of the hooves on big horses. Can you imagine the amount of hay they eat each day!?

    1. Thanks. For a second there, I thought you were telling me to delete the image! :)

  5. I do love the big guys. There's a wonderful breed where I come from, the Cleveland Bay I think. Huge and calm.

  6. Aren't Percherons the horses with broad backs that people in circuses stand on in sparkly dresses, at top speed?

    1. I think all heavy horses have broad backs, but I don't about the circus thing. I've seen Belgians and Brabants used for vaulting.

  8. I think that horses are beautiful but I've never really ridden. Many of my neighbors do. I'm afraid that I do have a few complaints about that... but I'll just stick with how beautiful the horses are :)
