glorious days and early nights

Where my day begins:

Just outside my door, facing East.

Where my day ends:

Just outside my door, facing West.

In between, there's usually some of this:

And a little bit of this:

And a whole lot of this:

It's been a long couple of weeks of combing goats,
and the end is not in sight.
But I can see progress.

Here are Acer and Dara, demonstrating "After" and "Before:"

Acer had been combed three times at this point,
and Dara was going to have his first combing as soon as I could get a collar on him.

I hope your May is going beautifully!

  1. Happy Combing! That is a lot of wool! Acer looks pleased

Ferns are fiddling well here in Vermont at this lower elevation. Folks like the tops fried. I'd rather store buy than trust my sad foraging skills. Flowering trees are in full peak bloom. Frost last night nipped a few flowers I covered too late. I hope they recover. I am glad I keep most of them in the warmer hall.

  2. Happy mid-May and leaf-out and comb-out! And brrrrr - not quite time to set out the tender plants in your neck of the woods!

    4. Hmmm - sounds like you may not check CHC that often. Could you reply to that email with the email address I should be using?

  3. Lovely photos. Shaggy goats! I bet they're happier when that's all off.

    1. I keep telling them that as I'm combing! "I'm only taking the part you've already released and are trying to drop but it's stuck in your topcoat! You'll feel so much better when it's off! You're welcome!" :)

  5. The goats must feel so relieved when all that itchy coat is gone, but that's not to say that they enjoy the process. Out of curiosity (and I'm sure this has been asked and answered in previous years) what do you do with the combings?

  6. Love your photos but came over from your tweet to comment on your daily markmaking (excellent red maple detail!), which is a habit I cannot seem to form. It's not a matter of finding the time. Any hints on how I can do this?

    1. Thanks, Jean - maybe I'll post that sketch here today. (I'm typing this outside, and that maple is right in front of me. It's a wonderful tree.) I really don't know why I've been able to stay the course for several years (so far) on the daily markmaking, since I was never able to do even an entire month-long challenge previously. I hope you'll keep going though - I always enjoy seeing your paintings when you share them!
