comparative vocabulary

In my neck of the woods,
what I woke to yesterday morning would be called
"a dusting of snow."

In Appalachia, I believe it would be called "a skiff."

Personally, I think "an etching of snow" describes it quite well.

What do you call it where you are?

  1. Skiff for both Mike (grew up in S. California) and me (grew up in New York/New England). An etching for you, feet for KB in high-elevation Colorado, and a rare spring thunderstorm here in Boise yesterday.

    Cheers,
    Chris from Boise

  3. Yep, that's a skiff :) But I agree, etching is better. Here, it's all rain all the time. More on the way tonight and tomorrow. It's getting very green out there.

  4. What I would call it wouldn't be fit to print! I guess it would be a dusting here too.

  5. It's a dusting here but I like etching better! It's amazing how it brings out the texture of nature. We are getting most definitely "not a dusting" with 12-24" falling by Friday morning. It's appropriate that it will happen on the first day of spring.
