world watercolor month

July is World Watercolor Month, and people all over the planet are trying to paint something every day and share it. Since my daily markmaking habit feels pretty solid (today is #550) I've decided to push myself a bit, by expanding beyond my usual sketchbook or card or miniature size. I have a watercolor pad of 11x15-inch sheets, and if that doesn't sound very large, let me tell you this: it looks vast to me before the brush first touches the paper! There are about 20 sheets in the pad...how many will I have to paint before it feels as comfortable as the 5.5x8.5-inch sketchbooks? This iceberg is painting #3, and it's the first one I like enough to share with you. I hope if you are having the kind of hot, humid weather we're having, the thought of ice and ocean will make you feel a little cooler for a moment or two.

Do you happily jump into new adventures,
or do you have to push yourself to try new things?
And if the  latter, how do you do it?
I'd love to hear!

  1. Well I learned something again - who knew there was such a thing as a world watercolor month? Your 'berg' looks nice and chilly which is a nice thought on a hot day like this. As for jumping or pushing - I do both!

    1. The iceberg is based on one from up your way, off the east coast of Newfoundland :) I'm not surprised you "do both" since you are always creating different things, and they are always delightful!

  2. Very nice
I wouldn't say jump, but I do sense an effort to hop sometimes when new adventures present themselves. I put all else aside, and think of new as a gift from God.

  3. Excellent. I like your iceberg. My sister's watercolor pads often have multiple subjects on it, as she tries things before doing it full-sized. Sometimes I jump, if it's something I'm interested in. Often I need to be pushed - let someone talk me into it, or tell someone I'll do something I'm afraid to do, just to be held accountable (no backing out in front of someone! lol).

    1. Thank you :) and I know about that "tell someone so I can't back out" method!

  4. Very nice, H! Funny you should be posting about this subject because I just learned about World Watercolor Month yesterday. But I'm not attempting to paint every day. I only began painting on April 16. And it was a case of "jumping into a new adventure." I was visiting a friend I hadn't seen in several months and she mentioned that she and her daughter had been going to an informal watercolor class once a week for a few months and asked me if I'd be interested. Often I have to think things over thoroughly, but I decided to just jump in! Hadn't painted anything since elementary school.

    1. Are you enjoying watercolor now? I always thought it seemed like a very unforgiving medium and was too intimidated to try it, but I'm continually amazed by how much fun it is!

  5. I love that blue!

I am not too good about jumping into new things. Mostly I think it's the old "fear of failing" that holds me back. Luckily I have a fella who is very bold and who encourages me to try things. I think maybe (maybe) some of that boldness is slowly beginning to rub off onto me!

    1. I think it may be fear of failing that holds me back from trying linoprint...I can't think of any rational reason, and I've been wanting to do it for years!

  6. It does look so cool and inviting! I must say that, as someone who cannot "mark" in any way, your tablet sounds vast to me too!

I used to be someone who leaped into new hobbies but now I've got too many... so I make myself NOT leap anymore :)
