a week of kerria

The Kerria japonica began to bloom a week ago.

This is my favorite phase - simultaneously displaying all stages of buds and blossoms.

This shrub was here when I bought the place, and has grown and grown.

This year it is vast: an intricate, wind-dancing marvel.

After one week, most of the buds have now opened.
The entire shrub appears more gold than green,
and glows even on a rainy day:

The flowers are rather delicate.
From now on, every rain and strong wind will leave petals on the ground.
I wanted to share it with you before that happens.

Daily Markmaking last night: Kerria japonica, 2019.

  2. Beautiful! We don't have anything like that here. We're probably too hot for it to thrive.

    1. I don't know what it's limits are, but I recently saw some snaps of it from NC where it bloomed weeks ago. Of course people there are already eating fresh veg from their gardens, too, and I'm still waiting to plant. This week, I think!

  4. It really is! I tend to plant natives, so I wouldn't have thought to plant this, but I'm glad it was already here :)

  5. I don't know if I have ever seen this shrub. It's lovely, Quinn. Like a mini-rose.

    1. It does look like a little rose, but without the thorns! I think it must have been very popular as a garden/landscape plant for a while, because the ones I see look like they've been in place for many years. Tipper posted a picture of one a while back and I had to go all the way back through her blog posts to April 16th to find it - which is a pretty darn good example of how much later Spring makes it to Massachusetts!

  6. That is so beautiful! I've never seen it before. Enjoy! We have almost no spring yet. Snow is predicted for tomorrow... so I'll enjoy yours for now!

    1. They do - a sweet scent - but it's not very strong. Which is probably just as well, considering how many of the flowers are blooming at one time!

  8. I have loved this beautiful plant for years. I grew up with one of these in my yard and called it the "pom pom bush" when I was little. I've tried to find out what the plant is called many times over the years, thank you for solving the mystery...and for a very happy memory from my childhood!

    1. Oh I'm so glad! Do you have one now? If not, shall we try to root a cutting from this one and see what happens? Do let me know :)

    2. I don't have one now. I would love to try with a root cutting. Thank you so much for the offer.
