crystal clear

See anything familiar in this photograph?

How about now?

I took Piper for a little walk in the woods by the pond today.
It was very cold, but the air was crystal clear and the sky, pale blue.

At this time of year, when it's safer to just assume that something is "in season" for hunters, and also that people may be hunting where it is not allowed, I keep Piper on lead until I'm as sure as I can be that there are no other people in the area. Then I let her roam a bit.

While I take loads of photographs.

We had a fine time.

It set me back on chores, and tomorrow I'll probably be gritting my teeth while trying to move extra hay because my back was aching too much to lift bales when we got home. But I'm glad we went. Especially since freezing rain is now predicted to start tonight and continue right through Saturday night.

I can move hay in freezing rain if I have to, but a blue-sky walk in the woods with Piper is a "seize the day" kind of thing.

p.s.
Thank you for all the nice comments on the 2018 Pictorial post - it was a tough choice to pick just 12 images from the 99 blogposts I wrote last year! For those who were interested in the fisher snapshots, here is a link to the "always learning" blog post from back in the Spring.

  1. Lovely to walk in the woods, but scary to think that there might be idiots with guns out there too. Some of them shoot without properly checking what they're shooting at. Hope you have a bright orange jacket (and one for Piper too!).

    1. I have my old orange forester's vest, and Piper has an orange fleece jacket. Either one or both of us wears orange during hunting season, but thanks for checking :)

  2. As to the 2018 Pictoral post: if these were printed up as a calendar I know at least one person who would buy a couple. :) Just sayin'.

    1. That's very nice of you, thanks, kayT! At the moment, I'm going to have to see how the Cloud Harvest Cashmere cards and magnets "do" before I make any other items for sale, but maybe next year :)

  3. I was getting ready to scream thinking the first photo is of a bear. I have bright orange Happy Halloween gloves in my car. Maybe you can knit ear covers for Piper in neon orange.

    1. Ha! I'll run that idea past Piper and we'll see what she thinks ;)

  4. I just got all caught up with you! How did I miss so many posts?? The retrospective of the year is lovely, so many fur friends. Loved it. We have not had a clear, sunny day all year--of course, we're only 5 days in. But right now, more rain. The water table has to be just inches below the surface, I swear.

    1. The water table seems to be sitting ON the surface here, Sue. It's a mess when the temps get above hard freezing!

  5. I agree that a blue sky winter day is to be seized!!! Piper sure does blend in at this time of year. I'm glad that she's wearing orange!

    1. In that particular spot - and especially in the photograph - she does melt into the scenery! But at that point we were on a little isolated spit of land and there was no one else anywhere nearby. Otherwise, she wouldn't even have been off-lead. Sundays are a relief, because NO hunting!
