Sweetfern, Comptonia peregrina, is neither sweet nor a fern. It looks like something the dinosaurs would have walked through, releasing the warmest, spiciest aromas of imagination.
It was like watching a perpetual motion machine, until she forgot to hold on with her hind feet and tumbled - bouncily - to the ground. Back up again in seconds!
Both the squirrels who have vanquished the feeder are females, and I am afraid they are planning to have 20 babies each and recapture my attic by sheer force of numbers!
Oh to be as fit as a squirrel! We have them climb nearly 30 feet up the painted brick wall of our building to get to the bird feeder on our balcony and then jump to the ground. Amazing athletes!
