no turning back

Yesterday, a cluster of delicate bloodroot buds - which I've been admiring daily -

opened!

The sky was overcast and rain soon began to fall, continuing all afternoon and right through the night. It was still raining when I got up this morning, and although it has now stopped, the sky is a heavy, dark grey.

But no matter.

The bloodroot is blooming.

That's it.

It's Spring!

Let's dive in.

  1. Those are so very pretty. Why are they called bloodroot?

    1. They are delightful! Do you not see them out your way? I think the name is just the color of the root "sap" :)

  2. The petals almost look waxy - not sure if they are. Haven't seen one of those plants here, but that's not to say that they aren't around somewhere.

    1. They could be easy to miss, and aren't very big when they are blooming - maybe I should start putting something in my plant photographs to give a sense of scale? But after the flowers are done, the leaves grow much larger and are just incredible - they might actually be easier to spot that the flowers! I'll try to post some pictures.
