dawn

I'm generally up well before dawn.
In the wee hours of the morning, in fact.
Some would say "the middle of the night."
When it's completely dark outside, unless there's a bright moon.

I do some routine morning things in the house: breakfast for Moxie and Della, breakfast for Piper (unless she's sleeping in and "will have brunch later, please"), unload or reload dishwasher, clean litterboxes, tend the woodstove, have something to eat or drink. Random puttering. You know the type of thing.

So when I first go outside, here is what I usually step into:

Can you see the string of fairy lights between the barn and the workshop?
(May have to left-click the image to enlarge.)

Those little lights give me a cheery lift every time I see them.
They will probably be up til Spring.
Maybe year-round.

The view from my window looks very much like that picture right now, so out I go.

LOTS going on today...will plan to post pictures and words tomorrow!

  1. I LOVE that view. Such a nice idea to put lights out in the distance like that. Happy New Year, Quinn. xo

  2. I do like those lights - I can see why they'd make you smile. I leave my lights up until Valentine's Day, for much the same reason. :-)

  3. I love those fairy lights and personally think you should keep them up all year! :D

Sorry I haven't been around for such a long time... under the weather big time but I'm crawling out of my igloo and pushing my way up the sun beams currently streaming through my windows...

Hugs for now... (P.S. new blog is up and running).

  4. I would definitely leave that little string of lights up all year long. :) I was getting up between 6 and 7 am every day but when my boys arrived for winter break, my sleep pattern got all messed up. I really do prefer waking up early. Didn't get up until 9 am today and feel like half the day was wasted.

  5. Wow, I wish that I naturally woke up early. I'd love to be a real early bird like you are. I love your lights. I can see why they give you such a lift!

    1. Be careful what you wish for ;) I'd be happy if I slept for 5 or 6 hours and woke up at 4 or so, but I'm usually awake at 1 and/or 2 and/or 3, because of pain, and then can rarely get back to sleep. Trying to shift that pattern a bit, but in the meantime, at least I can enjoy the moon through the porch windows :)

  6. I think the fairy lights should be left up all the time - some people here do and they look so pretty at night. I'm not an overly early riser (mainly because I have a husband that won't stop reading until at least 12:30 and I can't sleep while he has the light on).

    1. Thanks for that info! I think I'll tell people it's a Canadian custom and I am doing it as a gesture of respect for my ancestors :)

  7. How beautiful and peaceful, Quinn. And I too vote to leave the lights up. We leave some all year, or until they blow out or (usually) Larry cuts them with the weedeater.
