snowy snaps

There have been several dustings and a couple of real snowstorms in the past two weeks, and it was snowing heavily at bedtime last night. I was awoken in the wee hours by the town snowplow: backing up (beep!-beep!-beep!-beep! shrieks the safety back-up warning), then scraping forward thirty feet, and then backing up again (beep!-beep!-beep!-beep!-beep!) on the road right across the bottom of my driveway. Several times. This is a new technique. What could it mean? I'm hopeful that the driver was creating a long spot for the school bus to pull over, and that a side benefit will be easy access to my letterbox.

Piper is very sad when she cannot collect her mail.

At the moment it's still dark outside, so I thought I'd share a few snowy images taken recently. I like to get outside when the sky is light but overcast, to enjoy the softer shades of Winter.

My eyes are extremely light-sensitive (when we did studies of white objects in art class, I had to wear sunglasses in the basement studio), so I really enjoy the feeling of being able to "dive into" colors without squinting.

The clarity of strong lateral light is also irresistible at this time of year:

And the fleeting dazzle!

The day is beginning, and it's time for me to do something about breakfast and opening doors, say Moxie and Della. The sky is a uniform dark grey; we may be in for more snow today. Piper and I will have to investigate the letterbox situation soon.

Here's hoping we all have a "special delivery" today :)

  1. So jealous of your snow and icicles. Maybe we'll get some soon. And I am glad to see you back to posting and sharing your beautiful photos.

  2. Oh how I identify with the 'beep, beep, beeps'!! There has been ongoing construction just outside our building for the past couple of months and they start at daybreak with the requisite beeping and horn honking (the town buses, who feel that their back-up beeping mechanism isn't enough noise and they have to honk as well). We try not to dwell on the word being that it will be about a year before they're done. Snowing heartily here at the moment - no question there will be a white Christmas. Hope yours is blessed and wonderful.

    1. Oh the beeping!! This is the first year I've had a school bus doing the beeping thing at 7AM every weekday - no idea why, as none of the other school bus drivers finds it necessary to back up here.

  3. Such wonderful photos. Betula is pretty in the snow. I hope things weren't too icy for you today.

    1. Thanks, Sally - I'm so glad you enjoy the snaps.
If my land wasn't so topographically "interesting," I could be renting ice skates for seasonal income.

  4. Lovely photos, especially the sad face on Piper. Spot on look of sad as in not pleased would make a great note card.

  5. That is a series of incredible photos. When I saw the first one, I thought "that is the most beautiful photo". But then, I repeatedly thought that throughout your post. Thank you for sharing the winter beauty of your world!

  6. I'm curious as to the driveway situation...what happened? Hopefully something good! Seems as though y'all have had quite a bit of snow early in the season; hope it's not a portent of things to come.
Merry Christmas Quinn, to you and the fur babies.

    1. Thanks, Sandra - yes, it came in hard and fast. Not a big surprise, though!
Darned if I know what that plow driver was doing - or trying to do. Still a big mess by my letterbox, which I had to pay my own driveway plowman to try to clear out. If the box is blocked, I'll rent a box at the PO for a few months, but then I'll have to make special trips into town and won't get my mail but maybe once/week...not the best solution. I mean, sometimes I really get nice mail! :)
