Sweetfern, Comptonia peregrina, is neither sweet nor a fern. It looks like something the dinosaurs would have walked through, releasing the warmest, spiciest aromas of imagination.
My usual mail carrier is excellent - often goes above and beyond to get the mail to me despite snowbanks and wobbly mailboxes, puts things in plastic bags if they don't fit in the box, etc. So I did a genuine doubletake when I saw this package...I really think there must have been a substitute carrier that day!
