Sweetfern, Comptonia peregrina, is neither sweet nor a fern. It looks like something the dinosaurs would have walked through, releasing the warmest, spiciest aromas of imagination.
Do you have the monarchs there? Last year I had only 2 milkweed plants in an area that has enough light for them to flower, and I carefully took care of them all summer and even saved some of the seed from the flowers in case they didn't return. But this year, I have a little stand of milkweed! They are in a good place and get a lot of visitors and pollinating (apparently!) but I haven't seen a monarch yet. Fingers crossed!

ReplyDeleteBlooming season is ahead of this area of Vermont. I barely see milkweed getting reading for flower.
Wow, the blooms are almost there! I can't wait to see the milkweed flowers. I hope that you show us them!
ReplyDeleteI'll take some pictures tomorrow - they are blooming now :)
DeleteI just yanked out a ton of milkweed. I let quite a bit flower last year, wanting to help the monarchs, and I I may have overdone it!
