lemony

Yesterday, a friend asked, "What are you doing with all those lemons?"

My happy reply:

"Everything!"

Zesting, juicing, freezing, preserving.

Ingesting. Inhaling.

I also shared a dozen with a friend who loves to cook.
She immediately said "chicken piccata!" which sounded like a fine idea.
But the next day, before using even one,
she emailed a photograph of the lemons!
These lemons are irresistibly photogenic.

Have to say: as DeepWinter mood-lifters go,
this experiment has been a total success.
May even tide me over til the annual therapeutic trip
to the local florist for a pot of hyacinths!

Wishing you all a lemony day.

  1. Sounds delicious and luscious! My evening drink now is lemon juice and water. No sugar added. It seems to meet my need for something sweet & sour. I drink wine a lot less, and feel a lot better :)

    1. I'm a longtime fan of lemon juice in water - sometimes with honey, sometimes without. Usually make it with bottled juice, though. Now that I have many lemons...fresh-squeezed juice!

    1. Thanks, Danii - freezing whole lemons is definitely in my bag of lemony tricks! Not sure I will add grated lemons to "everything you eat" though :)

    1. I only wish you were close enough for me to share with you, Maywyn! Do you get Meyer lemons in the grocery store up your way? I saw them at WalMart(!) a couple of years ago, but not organic.

    2. I'll take a look next shopping trip. There's sure to be a store around here that does have them.

  4. My mouth is watering just looking at the photos.

You gave me pause with the word "inhaling" - what? She's snorting lemon zest? I stopped reading and let the words soak in. Ah - how can you NOT inhale their scent? lol Well, you did say "everything".

    1. HA! Also "ouch!" at the thought of snorting lemon zest - although I did take several good whiffs of it as I was zesting, and was surprised to find it didn't just smell "lemony" like the whole box smells when I open it every morning. The container of zest smelled lemony but it also smelled earthy, like a plant. Which makes sense, but still surprised me! :)

    1. I think that is a universal effect of lemon-thinking ;)

  6. I love the smell of lemons, and even mention of them makes my nose happy. :) I freeze the empty juiced lemon rinds, the grate so easily while frozen and are a nice add to almost anything.

    1. Any favorite things you would suggest adding to? I have been freezing the zested/juiced hulls to await ideas :)

  10. Who knew that lemons could make such a difference in one's outlook? You're making me tempted by this idea and I don't even love lemonade! :)

    1. I think my version is probably more like lemony-water than traditional lemonade...sometimes w a little sweetener, sometimes not, and sometimes with tonic water added (I'm adding quinine to my diet as a possible anti-inflammatory).

  11. I love lemon anything! And not lemon-flavored sweet things, but honest to goodness tart with a touch of sweetness lemony things. Here's hoping my Meyers lemon produces well this year.
