redrawing august

Remember #DrawingAugust 2014?

Well, I've signed on again. And if you have the inclination to join in, just follow that link back to Jean Stevens and ask her to add your name to the list so we all know how many people are playing along. And then put some sort of mark on some sort of paper each day in August, and post a snap on twitter with the hashtag #DrawingAugust.

It was so much fun last year, scrolling through the images posted each day. So many styles and subjects, and so much inspiration! I did not manage to post daily, but I did get into the habit of sketching more frequently than I've done in a long, long time. And it was enjoyable.

Off to a bit of a wobbly start today. Piper and I (and my sketchbook) headed for the pond, but as we got out of the car the blue sky suddenly went grey. A few minutes later, heavy rain began pouring straight down. Back in the car, I doodled with my colored pens - a birch branch hanging over the pond next to the car (seen through windshield wipers), and a red bee balm flower. But when the storm showed no sign of letting up, Piper and I headed back home and I posted this snap of my sketchbook.

I don't have a plan or theme for what to draw, but maybe it would be helpful. Or a list of subjects I could choose from at random. I'd really like to participate every day this year, even if it's just a 3-minute sketch...but sometimes it would be easier if there was an "assignment."

Does anyone want to join in?
If you do, we can cheer each other on :)

  1. No good my joining you - I'm hopeless at drawing...

    1. Try putting the pencil in your non-dominant hand and drawing for ten solid minutes. Then switch to your dominant hand, and you will be AMAZED at how well you can draw!

  2. Nice drawing.
Im going to think about it. I so rarely log on to Twitter anymore. And, I'm not so great on remembering to draw everyday. I'm still looking for a sketchbook I like. lol

  3. This is a really good reason to visit twitter, I think, I'll bet if you look through the #DrawingAugust postings and just get a sense of the range of work, you'll get a little flicker of excitement :) Especially since, unlike me, you really CAN draw well!

  4. I used to teach adults to draw and sometimes they found they drew well with the nondominant hand. I think the here goes nothing feeling released a lot of the rigidity that was holding up their flow of drawing.

I'm drawing plein air next Tues am with a group I just joined.

    1. Well, that's an even better reason for Dani to try it! :)
I just got in from drawing - that's twice in one day! beginner's momentum - down at the pond, where Piper had such an absolutely SPLENDID time, I had to immediately hose her off when we got home. She's outside drying now. I'm hoping an actual bath-with-shampoo will not be necessary, but...well, at least she really did enjoy herself!

  5. Sounds like fun! I don't consider myself a draw-er, but earlier this year I started a "wreck it"-style journal and would like to add more to it. I'm off to stalk twitter to get (more) inspired

  6. I am absolutely beyond horrible at drawing so this challenge won't be for me I'm afraid. I'm much more adept with needle and thread.

    1. I admit it's taking some effort to set aside time for this, but If I decide, "Okay, set a timer for 15 minutes and open the sketchbook!" it seems to go pretty well.
