newsflash

Guess what I learned at the Annual Plant & Bake Sale
that benefits our town library:

Spiderwort also comes in white!

I bought four pots of blue and two of white
(donated from local gardens)
and got them all into the ground
before the rain started this evening.

What I didn't do - as you may have noticed -
is take pictures when there was still enough light
for taking good pictures.

Normally, I wait til I have decent snaps before posting.
But this is different:
I felt you needed to know about the white spiderwort
right away.

Good pictures may come later.
After it stops raining.

  1. I've not seen a white one either. I have two varieties, one is dark green leaves like yours with a lavender coloured flower, and the other is chartreuse leaves with a jewel-toned purple flower. They transplant well too! I moved one last summer into a better spot, and it has grown incredibly large this spring. I love that white bloom ...

    1. Brace yourself, Wendyy: I was told there is also a PINK spiderwort! But I haven't seen one and it may be a myth.
Did you plant yours in full sun?

  2. Nice find.
My mother loved spiderwork. I looked up pink, and found one called Red Cloud on eBay. I had no idea parts of spiderwort are edible.

    1. Thanks! I had not heard they are edible. This plant just gets more interesting, doesn't it? Did read somewhere that there are varieties with parts that are toxic to cats and dogs - the pollen, maybe? They weren't the native plants, though, so I think I'm okay.

  3. That's what I like about blogging. You learn about things you never really thought you would need or want to do. Ha! Seems there's pink and white and purpose but mostly bright blue. And a whole slew of different species. And sometimes it's considered a weed. Now why is it that anything that grows proficiently is considered a weed? It sure is pretty. Weeds get such a bad rap! Have a good day. Tammy

    1. I was just saying that about blogging! Stopped at the library today and heard that the plant sale was very successful. I told the librarian about this spiderwort post and the informative responses! :)

  5. I've never seen a white spiderwort. Actually I thought it only came in blue but I see from the comments that that isn't true! Learn something new every day (or at least I hope I do).

  6. We had pink and blue ones in our garden, but I've never seen white (at least not that I'm aware of!).
