because summer will come

One day recently I came across a picture of a sewing pattern
for a garment that is just about exactly what I've been imagining
for several years.

Imagine that!

It took a couple of hours to figure out how to order it online.

And now it's here.
Time to dust off Auntie Ruby's Singer Featherweight!

With very good luck,
by Summertime (no rush, no pressure)
I shall have a functional yet stylish,
rugged yet comfortable,
smock/dress garment
suitable for gardening, and throwing hay,
and feeding hens and stirring dyepots
and lounging with a glass of iced tea.
The sort of garment I hope I'll reach for every day.

The search is on for appropriate fabric.
I'm thinking something the color
of goat hoofprints would be good.

Really? Why would you think that?

Disclaimer/Disclosure: I'm not much of a seamstress
(Sew-er? Sewperson?)
but I'm quite excited about this project.

And when a simple dress pattern arrives
packaged like this:

 I feel tremendously encouraged.

I shall do my best!

And after all, it's just one foot in front of the other, right?

(Right?)

Wish me luck!

    1. Thanks :)
This is the first time I've ordered a pattern from Japan, and what a lovely surprise it was to open the package!

    1. I'm terrible at sewing on buttons - maybe we could form a co-op!

  3. Good luck! Have fun selecting fabric!
I like Ben Franklin's piles of flat fabrics with all sorts of neat patterns. They look are mostly for quilting, but you can find some with a good draping weight to use for sewing clothes.

    1. Oh my gosh - is this the same Ben Franklin "5&10" I remember from my childhood? There was one in the town where I was born, and I have a few vivid memories of shopping there when the counters were just about at eye-level if I stood on tiptoe! It closed when I was very young, and I never realized there might be others. If so, what a happy thing to learn so early on a snowy morning - THANKS!

  5. Well, anyone who can build what you've built can certainly make an all purpose dress or whatever it needs to be called! maybe several, to withstand the constant pounding of little goat hooves..how exciting to order from Japan and get that great package.

You've given me hope that spring might actually get here.

    1. Have you got fresh snow in NJ? It snowed here yesterday and we're expecting more today...and I just got my bill for driveway plowing in January, which was more than what I usually pay for the entire winter - eek.
But yes, I do believe Spring is coming!

  7. What a beautifully wrapped package ... love the little fox ;) I see you have several sizes for the pattern. I always use transfer paper with a little wheel to transfer the pattern to the fabric when there are different sizes. Then I still have all the sizes available on the original pattern. Good luck with the sewing! I love sewing.

    1. Oh I'm glad you said that! I was wondering if I should make a separate copy of just the size I'll be using, and if so, where to get big sheets of translucent paper (or something) without spending an arm or a leg because I need them all for carrying water to the goats. Do you use one of the little wheels with the stabby teeth to transfer the marking to the fabric? I know I have one but I don't think I've ever used it. Another adventure?

  8. Very excited to see what the pattern is that you would send so far away for it. Picture of the cover, perhaps? Sneak peek of wonderful things to come? Happy Wednesday, my friend - happy sewing!

  10. Oh wow - you're a brave brave woman!! I can do all sorts of embroidery but even thinking of making clothes positively terrifies me. Had a traumatic experience in high school home ec sewing class and can't even think of sewing clothes (beyond pj bottoms for my kids - and even those are under duress).

  11. Prettily packaged. Good luck! I don't sew at all so I would definitely need more than luck. Best wishes, Tammy
