after the rain

kale

Yesterday afternoon, the sky suddenly became dark. Very dark.
I hastened out to the paddocks to shift the goats back up from their browse areas.

The hastening had to stop as soon as I was inside the fence.
I may have mentioned that goats hate change?
Well, they hate hurrying even more.

When you are working with goats,
there is one sure way to slow things down:

try to speed things up.

A pocketful of oats helped shift everyone fairly smoothly.
Done! Gates latched. Sweat dripping into my eyes.
(Not because I was working hard. Just because I was outside.)
The thunder was getting louder, but the rain hadn't begun.
So I spread the five waiting trugs of mucky hay
on the terrace garden, and quickly weeded the corn.
Then the rain started, so I headed inside to update Piper.
I was sure she would be worried.

She was sleeping.

So I went out on the screenporch to watch the storm.

Wowza!
It rained and rained and rained.
This was quite refreshing, as it has been so very horribly hot.
Hot and muggy. Day after day.
So hours of heavy rain gave me hope
for all the things we say about rain here:

"The gardens really needed it!"

"It will settle the dust!"

"The pollen will be washed away!"

"It will clear the air!"

Especially that last one, because lately, stepping outside in the morning
has felt like the moment before you step out of a hot shower.

Well, after going out at 6 AM for chores this morning,
I can report:

"The gardens really needed it!"

  1. yes we Brits say all the same things! It's feeling a bit "close" or "muggy" here and we are keen for rain.

    1. When we have snow upon snow upon SNOW in a long winter, there is always one cheerful person in any group who will observe, "We'll need this water come Summer!" By February, I try not to respond with an audible growl ;)

  2. Why is it we are never satisfied with the weather, it's either to hot & we need rain, or it's to wet :) Just now here in my part of France it's just right, it rained all night which was great as Mr France had just cut all the grass yesterday afternoon and now the sun is shining. Thanks for showing the Spiderwort I have some that's just appeared all by its self & I didn't know what it was. Now I'll be able to label it & transplant it to where I want it..

    1. I discovered a deep blue spiderwort growing in a field last year, and promptly visited a nursery to find out what it was, then bought a young plant for my garden. When it bloomed, the flowers turned out to be blue-purple, which was a surprise! I was thrilled to see it come up again this Spring. What color is your spiderwort?

  3. I don't like it when it's feeling a bit "close" or "muggy," as Kath mentioned. Rain and fog are my two favorite types of weather.

    1. You'd love it here today...more rain all day, after thunderstorms all night :) I'll have go out to give all the goats an extra ration of hay soon, as I'm sure they are snug in their shelters, not out browsing in the wet.

  4. LOL! Love your attitude and the gardens can always use the rain. The humidity is the part of the summer that I don't like, but nothing I can do about it at all.

    1. We've been having August's humidity in June this year. I hope that means August will be an early September!

  5. I think that we had a storm at the same time as you! I'm glad it cleared the air and made your garden so happy. Unfortunately, the drop in barometric pressure here started a migraine for me that hasn't quit yet. So, my attitude about these daily storms isn't as good as yours! :)
