postcard from the paddock

Saturday, the kids began to actively seek each other out and really play together for the first time, instead of bouncing around madly and joyously, but independently.

And the past two afternoons were warm enough that I could turn the new mamas and babies out in the little paddock for the first time.

I brought a lawn chair and a camera.

Tag! You're it!
No, YOU'RE it!
No, YOU'RE IT!!!!
(repeat until naptime)

There was a lot of coming...

and a lot of going.

Do you know about the astounding transcendence over gravity that baby goats discover in their very first days?
Watching this is one of my favorite things about kidding season.
Heck, watching kids flying is probably one of everybody's favorite things about kidding season!

But this year, watching the first-time mamas out in the Big World with their darlings for the first time was a special treat for me.

So quiet.

So serene.

So...

Violet?

Violet???

Lily?????

Wow!  Having a wonderful time!  Wish you were here!

  1. Hi Quinn, What great pictures, they made me smile. My Hubby is so jealous, he wants a goat badly but we don't have a place for them. We'll just have to enjoy yours.

    1. Hi Ronda - maybe we can do a house-swap for a week or two, and your husband can have all the goats he wants! You know I am dreaming of a return to the Sierra Nevada :)

    1. Sure-footed in every way! The little silver girl was trying to use a hind foot to scratch behind her ear the morning after she was born. Came pretty close, too! By the second day, she had it.

  12. Good Morning Quinn, How I love looking at your pictures. It brings back my childhood on the farm. We never had goats, but I have thought about getting one to help take care of my two acres. They are so much fun to watch when they are babies. Have a wonderful weekend. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri Friend.

    1. You'd want two, because they are such strong herd animals that they are not happy alone. But wow, can they ever do a job on brush-clearing! It's one of their jobs here, and they are very good at their work :)
