Sweetfern, Comptonia peregrina, is neither sweet nor a fern. It looks like something the dinosaurs would have walked through, releasing the warmest, spiciest aromas of imagination.
Just catching up here ... goodness you had a lot of snow. I am left with the mental image of a straggling line of goats plodding a meandering path to their hay and grumbling to each other about the person who couldn't tread a straight one!
You've got me thinking! Goats have many ways of moving, but I don't think I've ever seen one "plod." But this morning I watched a big doe suddenly jump straight up a few inches, when the little goat behind her got tired of waiting to move along the path, and gave the big doe a little bump in the behind! ;)
