The string cuts through stems quite close to the ground, but does not damage roots. I'm familiar with with much more powerful brush saws that work similarly but with a metal sawblade that can cut through saplings and brush, but had never seen the much more common weed whacker in use. When I clean out the barns, all the bedding (= uneaten hay) and goat manure is distributed on the gardens.
